Endocrine

The Endocrine service is a tertiary care service comprising an outpatient clinic covering both general endocrine and specialist services.  The former includes management of patients with various diabetes syndromes including those with metabolic syndrome and obesity.  The latter includes patients with thyroid cancer, adrenal and pituitary disorders as well as other rare endocrine syndromes.  Patients are admitted for specialized dynamic endocrine tests.  Where appropriate, patients with pituitary tumors undergoing surgery and those with thyroid cancer receiving radioactive iodine ablation are also supervised.

Gastroenterology

The Gastroenterology Unit serves inpatients in addition to outpatient clinics and consultation services.  This service covers general gastroenterology, hepatology and consultative services in the field of enteral nutrition, including placement of gastrostomy feeding tube.

The service is equipped with a state-of-the-art endoscopy unit.  All upper & lower gastrointestinal tract endoscopic procedures, diagnostic and therapeutic pancreato-biliary procedures (ERCP) are performed.  Emergency endoscopies are performed 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  In addition, there is a 24 hour esophogeal pH monitor service.

Infectious Diseases

The Infectious Diseases service is closely involved with infection control at the Hospital.  It is a primary admitting service for inpatients with infectious diseases.  It is also an inpatient consultation service and covers outpatient clinics for infectious diseases, adult vaccinations and travel medicine.  In addition, there is an active HIV clinic where the service is directly involved in setting its goals and methods, and in evaluating its performance.

Inpatient Services

Patients with a variety of general internal medicine problems requiring hospitalization for evaluation or treatment, or patients with complex medical problems are admitted under this service, and the assigned internist coordinates their medical care.

Nephrology

The Nephrology service is a multi disciplinary service.  It provides comprehensive care for all patients with acute and chronic renal disorders including patients with glomerular diseases, electrolyte disturbances, acute and chronic renal failure, and end stage renal disease.

The service includes the Renal Dialysis and RenalTransplant units:

The Renal Dialysis Unit currently has 22 hemodialysis machines for patients. It also has a well-established peritoneal dialysis program.

The Renal Transplant Unit is a comprehensive transplant program, which carries out full work-up procedures and performs living related and cadaveric transplantation. The RTU is supported by state-of-the-art and highly standardized laboratories and a well-stocked pharmacy

Outpatient Services

Mostly, general internal medicine is practised on an outpatient basis.  This service is the backbone of the department’s activities.  Most patients are first evaluated in this clinic by a consultant before they are referred to other specialties/sub-specialties or disciplines if necessary.

Pulmonary

The Pulmonary service deals with a spectrum of medical illnesses, which include obstructive airway diseases (such as asthma and COPD), interstitial parenchymal lung diseases (such as pulmonary fibrosis and connective tissue diseases), and pulmonary vascular and pleural diseases. Chest wall and muscular diseases are also covered by pulmonary medicine.

State-of-the-art diagnostic bronchoscopy is available. The Pulmonary Function Laboratory performs a full range of pulmonary function tests including arterial blood gases, spirometry, lung volume measurement (helium dilution and body box) and quantitative diffusion capacity.

The Pulmonary service covers both inpatient and outpatient clinics, in addition to consultation services.

Lung transplant assessment and performance is also available, with plans underway to expand the program and to do more cases per year.

Recently the Sleep Lab was established to do polysomnographies with an aim to perform up to three cases per week.

Pulmonary Services is taking care of cases needing the services of our Home Ventilation Program, thus easing the load of the Critical Care Department.
