Neonatal Intensive Care (NICU) |
|
NICU is set up to render specialized care with its wide range of high-tech equipment and supplies. It is the unit’s mission to achieve optimal healthcare by highly qualified medical and nursing staff and to continuously educate the parent in a supportive, resourceful way.
The NICU unit is registered for 15 beds, delivering care for level 1, 2 and 3 patients, and its scope of care includes premature and term neonates from Labour & Delivery. Patients are referred from surrounding hospitals in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for cardiac surgery, such as BT-shunt or PA-binding, to be admitted and cared for post-operatively in the NICU. PDA- legations are conducted in the unit on premature inborn admissions in collaboration with the OR team.
Premature neonates are admitted to the NICU with varying gestational ages, starting at 23 weeks. The unit is specialised to care for these patients, not only for single micropremies, but also twins, triplets and quadruplets. The unit had its set of quintuplets three years ago and their progress has been covered in the local newspapers.

Our scope of practice covers a wide area depending on diagnostic and therapeutic activities. The diagnostic activities include obtaining, analysing, and interpreting physiological specimens such as blood gases (ABG, VBG, CBG, and cord gases); chest x-ray interpretation; consultative patient assessments; performing sleep disorder studies; and test studies of the cardiopulmonary system. Our pulmonary function test lab is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and provides a full range of tests such as spirometry with flow volume loops, nitrogen wash-out test (FRC), body plethysmography lung volume, DLCO test, pulse oximetry, metabolic exercise test, oxygen consumption test, and ETCO2 monitoring.
The therapeutic activities include: medical gases and environmental control systems including nitric oxide; mechanical ventilator support; high frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV); artificial airway care; bronchopulmonary hygiene; pharmacological agents administration; and surfactant administration. We attend all high-risk deliveries including C-sections; the Cystic Fibrosis clinic; pentamidine treatments; patient transports, bronchoscopies; cardiopulmonary rehabilitation and hemodynamic cardiovascular support. We are also members of the hospital’s cardiopulmonary resuscitation team. We provide routine respiratory care to patients on all wards as well as the intensive care units. |
